LUCA CONNELL REACTS TO VICTORY OVER SHREWS

13 November 2022

The midfielder gave his reaction to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Shrews on Saturday to iFollow Barnsley.

Connell's midfield partner, Adam Phillips, gave the Reds the lead inside the opening ten minutes at the Montgomery Waters Meadow on Saturday afternoon.

"The game went as we imagined," the 21-year-old began. "We knew it would be scrappy and things like that, but, the lads dug in and good to come home with the three points."

The Liverpool-born midfielder has been utilised mostly as a more defensive-minded player under Michael Duff so far this season.

It is a position he is comfortable with, full of praise for the defenders that are positioned behind him on the field.

"However you look at it - back three or back five - it's been strong all season," he affirmed. "We had a tough run where it was four games and five goals conceded with five shots conceded.

"There's not many teams that go on a run like that. I'm glad we're over the other side of that now and we're just looking to keep more clean sheets."

Phillips' early goal was enough to see the Reds head back to South Yorkshire with all three points.

It's two in two now for the summer signing, and Connell spoke of Phillips' strengths and his contribution to the side.

"I think that's what he brings to the team," he discussed. He's a great player. He gets stuck in, tackles, wins headers. But, he brings some more goals as well.

"I think that's what we're all looking for and I think that's what we need. Whoever is chipping in with the goals, we don't mind!"
