JOSH BENSON PLEASED TO CONTINUE EMIRATES FA CUP JOURNEY

27 November 2022

After helping Barnsley ease to a 3-0 victory over Crewe Alexandra on Saturday at Oakwell, midfielder Josh Benson spoke of his pride in making sure the Reds are in the hat for round three of this season's Emirates FA Cup.

Playing in an unfamiliar right wing-back role, Josh Benson put in a solid display for Michael Duff's in-form side as the Reds advanced in the nation's most prestigious cup competition.

With Jordan Williams missing the clash with a slight knock, Benson was handed the task of getting up and down the right flank against the Railwaymen.

"I felt comfortable throughout the game," Benson told us. "I've not played there before; I did play right back in the youth team years ago, but I felt I did alright and I enjoyed the experience to be honest.

"The gaffer told me on Friday that I'd be playing there, so it was just about getting out there and doing a job. I just want to play and if it's right wing-back, that's what I'll do."

A new position didn't stop the 22-year-old from getting on the scoresheet, albeit from 12 yards when scoring the Reds' third goal on the day.

"I like taking penalties, I'm confident stepping up. I felt like I'd score, but it was good to see it go in and I need to start getting more goals for the team.

"You see the lads chipping in from different areas and that's massive for us."

Having spent 10 years in the academy system at Arsenal, there was only ever going to be one answer when asked who he'd like the Reds to be paired with in Monday evening's Emirates FA Cup third round draw.

"To be honest, we'll take anyone on. But personally, I wouldn't mind a Premier League team, especially Arsenal which is where I grew up, that'd be a good one for me."
