Members from the backroom team at Oakwell will link up with Carl Mellor to walk from Barnsley to Bramall Lane when the Reds face Sheffield United.
Further strengthening the ‘Together at every step’ partnership, Barnsley FC Chief Executive Officer, Khaled El-Ahmad, and Marketing, Commercial and Business Director, Andrew Clark, are amongst the Barnsley FC team taking on the 15 mile test ahead of the Sky Bet Championship clash on Saturday 19 March.
Commenting on the challenge, Andrew Clark said: “When Carl arrived at Oakwell prior to October’s fixture at Oakwell, I nominated a number of individuals to accompany him for the ‘return journey’. He’s taken us up on our offer and we’re looking forward to the walk!
“As a Club, we passionately support Weston Park. The charity works tirelessly to support people and communities across South Yorkshire, including in Barnsley and the surrounding areas. If you are in a position to support this walk, or indeed the wider partnership, it would be greatly appreciated by many.”
Darren Hayes, Business Development Manager at Weston Park Cancer Charity, said: “The attention and levels of support that this partnership has brought to the charity is fantastic. Whilst we are of course looking forward to our takeover day at Bramall Lane, it’s brilliant that Carl, alongside Barnsley FC, are making a commitment to raise further funds.
“The continued support of both Barnsley FC and Sheffield United means so much to Weston Park Cancer Charity and the people we support.”
Reds fan, Carl Mellor, added: “Back in 2018 my step-dad was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in his throat and neck. His treatment started immediately and all his care was under Weston Park. We knew about the hospital but the Cancer Charity were unknown to us; they were a god send not only to Steven but the whole family throughout and even to this day.
“Since then I have fundraised for Weston Park and currently raised about £16,000. Weston Park Cancer Charity and supporting Barnsley gave me the opportunity to link both, hence the walk earlier on this season from Bramall Lane to Oakwell which raised around £1,000.”
