Speaking after our 1-1 draw with Fulham on Saturday afternoon, Liam Kitching insists that Barnsley more than showed they are capable of retaining their Sky Bet Championship status.
The free-scoring runaway league leaders struggled to create many real openings at Oakwell and, but for Harry Wilson’s spectacular late strike, the Reds would have claimed an impressive victory.
“We’ve matched the best team in the league for 85 minutes and the ball has dropped in the middle of the pitch; we need to pick up second balls and clear the ball,” reflected Kitching.
“But I think we’ve made a good account of ourselves there and shown that we’re still fighting and that we can match the best teams in the league, that we are a good team and that we can get out of this relegation battle.
“I thought we were good on Tuesday as well and could have definitely got three points out of that and three points here.
“But, like I said, we’ve matched the best team in the league and we’re proud of that, but we’re also disappointed we’ve conceded so late after working so hard for the three points.”
With games coming thick and fast ahead of the international break, we are back in action on Tuesday evening as Bristol City visit Oakwell.
Kitching is confident that another performance similar to our last two on home soil will be enough to pick up three points against a Robins side who have struggled for form on the road.
“I think we’re going to take so much momentum and get the three points on Tuesday because, over the last two games, we’ve been really good, so hopefully we can take the momentum into that and get the win,” he continued.
“I don’t really look into the table too much – I just take every game as it comes and, if you look at the past two games, we’ve been brilliant.”
