MATTY WOLFE ON RETURNING FOR PRE-SEASON TRAINING

7 June 2022

After completing his first day back at Oakwell, we caught up with Reds midfielder Matty Wolfe to see how he was getting on.

One of the bright lights of the previous campaign, the 21-year-old from Wakefield signed a new contract at the end of April and his focus is purely on the here and now.

Whilst the disappointment of last season was felt by everyone, Wolfe believes it's about moving forward and trying to make sure that this time around, the end-result is very different.

"Obviously it was massively disappointing last season," he admitted. "But we've got that out of our minds now and it's about going into the new season fresh and thinking positively.

"I've got to push on this year, there's no other way forward really. It's a big year for me and I want to do my all to try and get this club back where it deserves to be."

We spoke with Matty after Monday's first day back at the club, where a group containing mainly the younger element of the Reds' squad were put through their paces by James Walsh, our First Team Sports Scientist.

There wasn't anything overly strenuous, but Wolfe reckons it was good to be back in earlier than usual and says it was good to see teammates again after a month off.

"It's about being stronger this season, doing the extra bits and making sure we are all ready to go. And it's been nice to see all the lads again, everyone's smiling faces, we're all happy to be back, ready to get started.

"I had a couple of holidays after the season, just to relax really, because it was quite mentally draining by the end of it, it takes it out of you, that disappointment I suppose.

"So I had that time away, and then I've kept myself ticking over, and I feel good that I'm back in now. It's a fresh start."
