FIRST INTERVIEW WITH CONOR McCARTHY

28 June 2022

Following his arrival from St Mirren earlier this month, Conor McCarthy expressed his delight at signing for the Reds.

The Irishman, who came through the ranks at Cork City, is our fourth new addition and is looking forward to getting started at Oakwell.

“It feels great,” he smiled, speaking to iFollow Barnsley. “It probably took a bit longer than expected, but now that it’s all signed, sealed and delivered, it’s a great feeling.

“I suppose you just have to take one look around at the stadium and facilities that this club has, and I needed no second invitation to sign for a massive club like this.”

During his time with Cork, McCarthy competed in both the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds.

He believes those experiences will only prove to be beneficial for him moving forward as he aims to make an impact for the Reds.

“It was fantastic to get that opportunity at such a young age,” reflected the 24-year-old. “I’ll have memories that will last me a lifetime, playing in such big games can only help my career going forward.”

Heading into the new season, McCarthy is hopeful of a productive campaign at Oakwell – both individually and collectively as Barnsley look to bounce back to the Sky Bet Championship at the first attempt.

The Irishman has targeted regular game time under Michael Duff in order to help the Reds achieve their goals.

“Personally, it’s up to me to play as many minutes as possible this season – that’s got to be at the forefront of my mind; make my debut as soon as possible,” asserted McCarthy.

“I think, collectively, for the team and everyone behind the scenes, the ultimate goal is to get promotion. The Championship is where this club belongs and we’ll all be pulling together to achieve that this season.”
