NOTTINGHAM FOREST PREVIEW

24 January 2022

Pre-match insight ahead of our latest Sky Bet Championship fixture.

We are straight back down to business on Tuesday for more second tier football, with the rearranged clash with Nottingham Forest set to kick-off - finally - at 7.45pm, offering another chance to kick-start a revival.

Fresh from their latest 2-1 away defeat, suffered at the hands of an out-of-form Birmingham City at the weekend, Barnsley are fast running out of opportunities to begin their ascent up the Championship table.

Yet again, despite our defeat, nobody around us made any progress either. So another opportunity missed, but from a positive point of view, it means Poya Asbaghi's side didn't lose any ground themselves.

They did lose another away game though. A ninth empty-handed road trip from 13 played this term. Horrific form on the road. The only club in the division yet to pick up three points on their travels.

The game at St. Andrew's had started brightly enough, with home goalkeeper Neil Etheridge forced into making two terrific saves in the opening quarter. But slack defending saw the struggling Blues take the lead 10 minutes before half-time and, five minutes after that break, Birmingham doubled their lead.

A rare mistake from Brad Collins and an unfortunate ricochet or two and (former Reds trialist from a decade ago) Scott Hogan duly pounced.

With time running out, Victor Adeboyejo struck a consolation goal but defeat was confirmed by the final whistle soon after. Not since April last year have the Reds tasted success away from Oakwell.

There were knocks for all of Liam Kitching, Callum Styles and Aaron Leya Iseka at St. Andrew's, but it remains to be seen how damaging any of them were, or whether or not we'll see missing players back in the fold for Tuesday night's slightly shorter trip to Nottingham.

Our City Ground hosts have transformed their season since the arrival of Steve Cooper in the famous Forest dugout. They kicked off the campaign with six defeats and one draw, and were three points behind the Reds before the first meeting at Oakwell.

They have since racked up 35 points and now sit just four points outside the play-offs as we prepare to lock horns tomorrow evening.

The Reds began that first clash at the end of September in decent fashion and deservedly led through a 20th minute Cauley Woodrow spot-kick. But Forest took us apart after the break, their pace out wide took advantage of our high backline and goals from Phillip Zinckernagel, Brennan Johnson and Lewis Grabban saw the visitors to a 3-1 win.

In terms of the Reds' record at this venue, it's been a mixed bag of results over the last decade or so. Last season saw a 0-0 bore-draw, whereas the previous two visits saw defeats in 2019 (1-0) and 2018 (3-0).

You've to go back to our first game of 2017 to find our last City Ground success. In a game that Barnsley dominated, we had to wait until the final moments for a winner, when captain Conor Hourihane rocketed a strike home from 30 yards.

FOREST V BARNSLEY 29.jpg

Forest are coming into this game off the back of a home victory in the East Midlands derby over Derby County, where goals from Grabban and Johnson were enough despite a late Tom Lawrence strike for the Rams.

The man in the middle on Tuesday night will be Michael Salisbury. He last took control of a Reds fixture just over 12 months ago.

He was the referee for our 1-0 defeat against Norwich City on January 2 last year at Carrow Road. He'd earlier taken charge of that season's 2-2 draw away from home against Stoke City.

The big game against Forest will be broadcast live by iFollow Barnsley.
