BARROW PREVIEW

5 January 2022

Pre-match reading as the Reds prepare to kick off their FA Cup journey this weekend!

Following the postponement of our planned trip to Nottingham Forest in Sky Bet Championship action, attentions have turned to the weekend and our efforts in this year's Emirates FA Cup.

We are set to welcome Sky Bet League Two strugglers Barrow AFC to Oakwell on Saturday 8 January in a 3pm kick-off

The Bluebirds have made it to the third round having already seen off Banbury United of non-league and then League One outfit Ipswich Town after a replay.

There are no replays in the third round, so the tie this Saturday will be settled on the day, as the Reds look for a morale-boosting victory.

Our visitors this weekend are enjoying a second straight season back in the Football League after a previous 48-year exile.

In charge at Holker Street this season is former Swindon Town boss Mark Cooper. And after a somewhat inconsistent start to the campaign, the Cumbrian outfit have struggled badly of late and come into this cup tie hovering just above the League Two trap-door.

WILLIAMS PRE-BARROW

6 January 2022

There are a few familiar names in the Barrow squad. Ollie Banks, the son of Barnsley legend Ian, is top goalscorer, playing in midfield, as does former Red Josh Kay who made one start for Barnsley back in 2016. Whilst young centre half Joe Grayson is the son of former Leeds manager and Leicester City defender Simon.

It’s 52 years since the clubs last met, and the last time Barnsley played Barrow here at Oakwell was also in an FA Cup tie back in 1969 when an Eddie Loyden brace and a Jimmy Robson solo effort saw the Reds to a 3-0 victory, and progress in the world’s oldest cup competition.

The man in the middle for this weekend's tie will be Ross Joyce. And it will be his first visit to Oakwell since 2018, where he took charge of our 4-0 victory over Oxford United and latterly a 3-2 win against Luton Town.
