MARTIN PATERSON PREVIEWS VISIT OF BRISTOL ROVERS

15 August 2022

Our Assistant Head Coach, Martin Paterson, faced the press ahead of the visit of Bristol Rovers in Sky Bet League One action on Tuesday night at Oakwell.

ON DERBY COUNTY GAME

"Unfortunately, we conceded on a set play, eight minutes in. I think we all know, away at a big club such as Derby, an excellent team in this division, it's going to be tough.

"I think there are massive positives to take from the game. One, the players' reaction to get themselves back into the game, and we're watching it as the staff thinking 'possibly should have got points from that game', with the chances we created.

"The support was fantastic at the weekend. They got behind us, and at the end, I was watching quite closely as the players got a round of applause because I don't think we could have done any more in terms of effort, and it's just those final pieces that we'll be working on."

ON JOSH BENSON

"He's in a good rhythm, good form.

"But again, I think it's just a part of the team adhering to what Michael wants and the individuals will come out of that. It's all off the foundation of doing the team beliefs.

"It's a fresh start for everyone. What Michael is trying to build, with the staff, with the players, is quite clear in the first three or four games; what direction we're heading into in terms of everybody working, there must be sweat on the shirt. I go back, individuals will come out from that.

"Each week it might be a different individual, but it's great if it is the same individual. The boy has done great, he's scored goals in the last couple of games."

ON INJURY CONCERNS

"There are no new, fresh injury concerns.

"We're hoping for certain players to be back, it looks promising."

ON BRISTOL ROVERS

"They're doing really well.

"I'll dial back to the fact they had a phenomenal run for promotion. They're a team that are full of confidence, they're in an excellent rhythm - in terms of getting promoted - winning a couple of games early on in the level.

"We're at home, and we're confident. We're also very respectful for the quality of the team that's coming up. Again, they're riding the crest of a wave of promotion and a good start in the league."

ON HIS TIME AT THE CLUB SO FAR

"Absolutely fine, working hard.

"I've known Michael for many years, played with for years upon end, so I know how he works as a person. I've got my hands dirty straight away and we're working and coaching the players that we have to get them better everyday, it's as simple as that."

ON MICHAEL DUFF

"The gaffer is someone who is consistent. He expects the players to work hard, day in day out. He stays consistent with that, in terms of the fact he's here to win.

"For me, it's really simple to come into work for a manager that just wants consistency. He doesn't get carried away, emotionally; his emotional control is excellent. At the weekend we're watching the game and I'm thinking we could have won that on a different day but there's no change.

"We come in this morning and we attack Bristol Rovers with everything we've got."
