LUKE THOMAS DELIGHTED AFTER VICTORY OVER THE ROBINS

7 August 2022

Speaking after our 1-0 win against Cheltenham on Saturday, Luke Thomas was delighted to score the winner and secure the three points in the first league game at Oakwell this campaign.

In his first league appearance for the Reds in almost 18 months, Thomas scored in the 66th minute with what turned out to be the winner for Michael Duff's team in the sunshine on Saturday.

Three points, a clean sheet and a goal is an ample recipe for a good day's work, and Thomas himself agreed: "Most important is the three points," began the midfielder.

"But, it's always a bonus to score a goal. I haven't scored many, so hopefully that can be the first of many now and I can get a few this season."

Thomas' goal was enough to secure the three points for Michael Duff's side on Saturday, and a perfect response to defeat on the opening day last week at Plymouth.

Now that three points are on the board, Thomas believes it provides the team with a platform to build on and kick on in this campaign: "You always want to get your three points as early as possible," he continued.

"We've got that in the bag now, so hopefully now we can kick on and get as many three points as possible."

Not only was it our first game at Oakwell for this new 22/23 season, but Thomas' first minutes on the pitch here at Barnsley since 2020.

Thomas enjoyed his return to Oakwell and praised the fans for their support on Saturday afternoon: "I've not played in front of them [the fans] for a while," he acknowledged.

"What an atmosphere. When that ball goes in the back of that net, there's no better feeling. Great atmosphere - and hopefully they go home feeling happy."
