MICHAEL DUFF PREVIEWS BORO CLASH

9 August 2022

Michael Duff spoke to the press ahead of our Carabao Cup Round One tie with Middlesbrough on Wednesday evening.

After a 1-0 victory on Saturday against Duff's former side Cheltenham Town on Saturday, a testing week follows for the Reds, starting with Chris Wilder's Boro side at the Riverside on Wednesday.

INJURY UPDATE

"[Nicky Cadden] Not as bad as we feared. He's got a tiny little something in there but not a lot, so we made the right decision getting him off. He won't be available for tomorrow night, but he's got a chance for the weekend.

"Wolfey [Matty Wolfe] won't be available - he's a week in now so he's probably got another two or three weeks left.

"Herbie (Kane) and Michał (Helik) are with the physios at the minute. Other than that, everyone else should be available."

SQUAD ROTATION FOR CUP GAME

"There will be changes, without completely changing the team.

"We're going to a good team. What we don't want to do is - it's not fair if you make eleven changes - it's not fair on the eleven that come in. It's hard to just throw a team together in one day's notice.

"People will need managing in their minutes, we've got a tough run coming up now - as has everyone else. It's managing people in positions that we think we're maybe light and we need to look after."

ON MIDDLESBROUGH

"It starts from the top - good manager.

"The way that I've played in the last three or four years is very similar to how Chris Wilder plays in terms of the system and the personnel within it. A deep 'lyer' and the two 8's that run on and the centre forwards running in behind.

"It's almost the best practice when you watch them play! 'Yeah that's what I want us to do'. It will be good to pick Chris' brain after the game as well.

"A good Championship team full of quality so, I'd imagine they'll make a few changes as well. They'll be strong, their squad is not massive either at the minute. The squad they have got, it is full of quality."

ON CHELTENHAM VICTORY

"I think it's a relief for everyone. I thought it was - without being spectacular - I think it was a pretty comfortable 1-0 if there is such a thing. There were good bits and bad bits. It's never as good as what you think and it's never as bad as what you think. Last weekend probably showed that. The Plymouth game we were poor, we didn't deserve to win, but I wasn't holding my head thinking 'we aren't going to get a point this season'.

"It's just nice to get the win, and winning in front of the supporters is something we need to do as often as we can because they're the ones that are going to be ones watching most of the time."

ON THE CUPS THIS SEASON

"Try and win the game, the same as what I said on Saturday. The team will change, but that's not me not prioritising, that's giving people opportunities.

"It used to annoy me as a player as a senior player towards the end when the younger lads used to go 'well I'm not playing in that game', I said 'it's a game of football'.

"Don't let your ego get in the way, it's a professional game of football. You're going away to a Championship side, so try and win, put a marker down. Even if we don't win the game, put a marker down for yourself.

"It's just the way I work. Try and win the first half, come in at half-time, assess where we're at - win, lose or draw. Put the music on, try and win the next half.

"I've said it all along, I don't like making big predictions of where we're going to finish, just try and break it down and keep popping your head up every now and again to see where you're at."
