MYLAN BENJAMIN POST-CHARLTON ATHLETIC

4 April 2022

Our U18s emerged victorious in the Professional Development League on Saturday, beating South division leaders Charlton Athletic 2-1 in the capital.

After falling behind in the first half to a Jason Adigun effort, the young Reds mounted a second half comeback courtesy of goals from Mylan Benjamin and Theo Chapman.

Benjamin was introduced to the match just after the hour mark, after his teammate Fabio Jalo was brought off with a knock.

It didn’t take long for the attacker to make an impact however, equalising for the Reds on 70 minutes with a powerful drive from the edge of the area. Benjamin was following strict, yet simple instructions from his gaffer before being brought into the fray.

“He just said run,” he smiled.

“Make sure to press the keeper because there was a mistake in him and there was, because it led to Chappers’ second goal. I was happy, and happy for him.

“Come onto the pitch, make a difference. It was good to boost the team.”

Sometimes with the sort of goal Benjamin scored you can tell whether it is going in or not as soon as it leaves your boot, but this was not the case for the former Manchester United youth player on this occasion.

“I didn’t realise it went in until someone ran over to me!” laughed the 17-year-old.

“Someone ran in front of me, so I didn’t really see it go in but was it was nice to know it went in after!”
