CALLUM STYLES ON ROVERS TEST

17 September 2021

Our midfield maestro looks ahead to the visit of Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.

ON START TO SEASON

“I think it’s been quite solid. There’s been strengths and areas we need to work on, but it’s a good steppingstone for the rest of the season.

“We showed a lot of courage against Stoke, a lot of togetherness, and we need to build on that going into the middle of the season and we need to get as many wins as possible.”

ON LAST TWO GAMES

“Obviously, Bournemouth are a very strong team, but we weren’t at our best and it’s basically a double whammy. We knew we weren’t at our best and, against Stoke, we knew we had to show what we’re capable of and show the fight that we all have in us. In the end, we got a point.

“Last season, we got beat off Bournemouth 4-0, so it’s not as if we’ve taken a massive step back. It’s just about getting everything in place and building on what we’ve got, and I think it’ll all fall in place very soon and we’ll start picking up wins.”

ON BRAD COLLINS

“We all know he’s capable of having a game like that. I think it was one of the best games of his life – I think everyone will agree with me on that one. It was very good for him to have such a good game, and it’s a massive boost to the team.”

ON PERSONAL PERFORMANCES

“I think I’ve started decent – I’ve got a goal and assist; it’s just about building on that, getting more goals and assists and, hopefully, getting more wins for the team.

“I just want win games, I want to score goals, I want to assist and that’s the main thing – those are the three main areas that I want to do throughout my career, now and later on.

ON NEW STYLE

“It takes time; a lot has changed from last season, so it’s about us getting used to that and, like I said, it’ll all fall in place soon. Hopefully, we’ll start putting good results to the good performances.”

ON NEXT FIXTURES

“Every team in the Championship can win on their day, so you have to bring everything you’ve got to each match and, tomorrow, we’re hoping to do that. We’re hoping for all the squad to bring everything they’ve got to get the three points.”

ON SQUAD DEPTH

“Both Jasper [Moon] and Will [Hondermarck] are young lads – we’ve got a young-ish squad, anyway – but they’ve done very well when they’ve played, especially Jasper, and I think it’s helped him being around the squad for a couple of years and he’s developing. So, the depth in the squad is very good.

“When all the players come back, you’re fighting for your place and the standard goes up because everyone wants to play every game, so everyone is battling for their place in the team. But it’s a good battle, there’s no nastiness – we all push each other to get better – and, hopefully, when they come back, the standard will go up even more.”
