MARKUS SCHOPP POST-STOKE CITY

16 September 2021

Following our 1-1 draw with Stoke City on Wednesday evening, Markus Schopp praised his ‘heroes’ for their attitude and commitment during a tough encounter in Staffordshire.

The Reds stood tall to a man and dug deep to salvage a point against the high-flying Potters, with Brad Collins, in particular, impressing with a string of magnificent stops and a penalty save to deny Mario Vrančić.

“I think we saw an epic fight with a lot of heroes,” stated our Head Coach. “If we had to pick one of these heroes, it would be Brad because he was amazing. But I think the effort from the whole team for 90 minutes was awesome.

“We know what quality we have in the goal and this was the best part of him. We know he has a lot of potential and we’re glad to have him in our goal. But he’s only one part of the success to get this point and, again, there were a lot of heroes.

“The effort and character was absolutely amazing, again. It’s a tough one for us to play in; it’s a situation that was not easy before the game and we’ve handled it in a good way.

“In the end, I think it’s a really good point for us.”

Up next for Barnsley is the visit of Blackburn Rovers this weekend, with Tony Mowbray’s side sitting eighth in the Sky Bet Championship having lost just once in their opening seven games.

However, Schopp is hoping that the Reds can take confidence from their performance at Stoke and pick up three points on Saturday afternoon.

“Everyone in football knows what can happen with a game like this, with a result like this – how it happened and the way it happened, with a lot of ups and downs,” continued the Austrian.

“To come out with a point and the way the lads did it was unbelievable and that’s fundamental for building the next steps.”
