MARKUS SCHOPP ON LIONS CLASH

1 October 2021

The Head Coach previewed our next league clash, against Millwall tomorrow.

ON PLAYER AVAILABILITY

“Josh Benson will not be available tomorrow, so we must plan without him. I can’t tell you how long he will be out for just yet, I might find out more tomorrow.

“He felt some pain in the warm-up on Wednesday night and so we are waiting for the report from the doctor just now.

“So it’s the same group available for tomorrow, only without Josh.”

FOREST DEFEAT

“We had our plan and we did all the basics really well in the first half. It was positive, we did enough. But then after the break we became hungry for the second goal and in the transition moments we lost out.

“We lost two balls in transition, and the first two goals felt like a punch in the face for our guys.

“There was no power left after that, we didn’t look like finding an equaliser and then we conceded the third goal. It was a bad night for us.”

ON DEVELOPMENT

“We need leaders on the pitch right now. We have young players, but they’ve had experience in this league now so we need more from the guys.

“I see a lot of good things in games, but there are certain situations where we keep falling short.

“There are important players we are missing, and some players who are developing really well but you probably can’t see it right now. But they’re getting experience and they’ll learn from this tough spell.

“I’m not pointing at the issues, I’m looking for us to find solutions. We have to answer the questions asked by our opponents.”

FINDING THE ANSWERS

“I know how hard we are working, I know the lads are working hard. None of us wanted to be in this position, but I am convinced that we will work our way out of this situation.

“We are investing all that we can into everything that we do.

“I think game-management is big for us. It’s all about doing the right things in the right time. If you look at our first halves compared to the second for example.

“Things are not easy, but it’s up to me first of all, to find the solutions. I have not lost or changed my focus, or my objectives. The process for me continues and I hope we are talking about better results in the near future.”

CLAUDIO GOMES

“He’s come from a great club, but he has a lot to work on, to develop. The Championship is a tough league and there’s a need for patience, time to adapt to how we play, and to adapt to the level he’s now playing at.

“We’ve seen the good things he can offer, and we’ll give him the time and the chances to find his way for us across the season.”

PLAYING STYLE

“We’ve tried to play direct in certain games this season, but we don’t have certain types of player in certain positions. So it’s not going to be as effective.

“So we’re having to try different ways, the situation right now makes it that way for me.

“In terms of goals, it’s not through lack of opportunity. We have had chances. But in the second half of games, we aren’t performing at the same level. We must find a 90 minute performance, starting tomorrow.”

ON THE FANS

“I’m glad the fans are inside the stadium with us, but I understand that without results there’s a pressure. But we need them with us, the players need the support from our fans.

“A result tomorrow would give us a lift, a better feeling.

“I know things aren’t easy right now, but together we can get through this.”
