Following our 1-0 defeat against Millwall on Saturday afternoon, Markus Schopp expressed his disappointment at conceding a late goal, insisting that the Reds deserved more for their efforts at Oakwell.
Murray Wallace’s 89th minute header was enough to seal all three points for the Lions in a game that Barnsley had the better chances, but were unable to take advantage and, ultimately, paid the price.
“Losing a game in the last minute is a tough one, especially in the situation we are in right now,” began our Head Coach. “I think, after the last two games, it was so important for the lads that they saw that we can get a point.
“We had a couple of moments in the game where we could have turned it in our direction. This is right now something that we need; we need something to get more confidence in these moments.
“It’s so crucial that we start to move these small things in the game on our side. This is a hard one, but for this we have to work hard and that’s what we want to do.
“Even in the last games, the difference is not that big – it’s only about us, that we get much more out of our chances and to defend better in certain moments. This is what we try to work on, and this is the situation where a lot of small things are going against us and we have to work to put in in the right direction.”
With two weeks until our next assignment after the international break, this is a good opportunity for the Reds to get out on the training ground and rebuild a bit of confidence on the back of three defeats.
There is also a possibility that those players sidelined through injury will slowly start to integrate with the squad in the coming days, giving Schopp and his coaching staff more options moving forward.
“It’s working on details, but it’s a situation where we need to work with the lads, mentally,” continued the Austrian. “The last week was not the week how we planned it – we wanted to get much more out of it. First of all, better performances and, second, more points.
“This is something that we have to work on and there are a couple of things where we have to improve, and hopefully one or two guys will be joining the group in the next two weeks.
“We are still at the beginning of a very long season and, for a couple of young lads, it’s really important to get this experience right now to get bigger and we’re here to help them.”
