Speaking after our 3-2 loss against Sheffield United, Devante Cole feels that, while the mood is low following this latest setback, morale remains high in the dressing room after how Barnsley rallied in the closing stages.
Trailing 3-0, the Reds dug deep and netted two late goals and battled hard to find an equaliser, but it wasn’t to be as we suffered a disappointing derby defeat.
“It’s low, as you’d expect,” said Cole. “But, at the same time, there’s confidence amongst us for what we’ve shown there in the last 20 minutes; I think that’s got to be our standard from here on out.
“I think, if we push on and continue that, we know the group that we’ve got and we can definitely pick results up.
“You come out fighting when you’ve got nothing to lose, but I just think that last 15 or 20 minutes is us and what we can do. As a group, we need to stick together. We can bring that to most games and, when our intensity is high, we can pick up results.”
Our forward is now off the mark in his second spell at Oakwell, and he opened his account with an expertly taken finish – controlling Callum Styles’ fizzed low cross before swivelling and firing high into the top corner.
The finish oozed confidence and, while it didn’t have any bearing on the overall result, Cole was delighted to have got his first goal of the season.
“It’s nice to get a goal and I would have loved to have put us in the lead, so I didn’t really celebrate,” he continued. “But it’s good to get off the mark and, for me personally, scoring goals is what I do and what I’ve done, so I just want to continue doing that now.”
