U18S DRAW WITH COVENTRY CITY

12 November 2021

Our young Reds continue their unbeaten run in the Under 18 Professional Development League and stay top of the table following a goalless draw with Coventry City at the Oakwell Training Ground on Friday afternoon.

The Sky Blues had the first opportunity inside ten minutes when a Sam Rodber shot was well blocked and sent looping over Archie Brown’s net for a corner.

The visitors kept the pressure up as the first 45 ticked on, with Isaac Moore heading wide from a corner.

Rodber had another great chance to open the scoring before the half hour mark with a shot just inside the Reds area, but the striker was off balance and his effort was held safely by Brown.

Barnsley’s first chance of the game came 32 minutes in, with a Matthew Doyle shot sailing over the bar from a corner.

With a heated conclusion to the first-half, the Reds hit the crossbar when Hayden Pickard’s cross from a short corner nearly caught Charlie Callaghan out in the City goal.

In the dying embers, another Barnsley corner led to a goalmouth scramble with a great save and two goal line clearances in a heart stopping 15 seconds as the ball pinballed around the 12-yard box.

HALF TIME: Barnsley 0-0 Coventry City

Like the first, Coventry were strong at the start of the second half with two quick corners, the first leading to a Dominic Sadi strike past the post.

With the ball predominately being played in the middle of the pitch, the visitors could only find a threat from distance with Callum Perry firing well over from 30 yards.

With ten minutes to play it was the Reds turn to try from range, with Ben Hall curling narrowly wide from 25 yards.

In additional time, the game blossomed with end-to-end football.

City had the first chance with Rodber hitting the ball into the gloves of Brown, but then the Reds could have stolen it at the death. Substitute, Harrison Nejman, only managed to find the hands of Callaghan from a set piece.

In the final minute Rodber fired a free kick in a dangerous area well over to share the points in this stalemate.

FULL TIME: Barnsley 0-0 Coventry City

REDS XI: Brown, Hall, Doyle, Murchison, Pickard, Makessi, Goucher (Nejman), Hickingbottom, Smith (Dyer), Hartley, Jalo (Benjamin)

Unused Substitutes: Ravenhill, Joof
