REDS BEATEN BY HULL

6 November 2021

Barnsley fell to a disappointing 2-0 defeat against Hull City in the Sky Bet Championship on Saturday afternoon.

Goals from George Honeyman and Keane Lewis-Potter either side of the break consigned the Reds to defeat at Oakwell heading into the international break.

Barnsley were positive in the early exchanges, threatening the Tigers’ area but to no avail. Hull grew into the game, seeing a couple of efforts flash wide, but nothing to worry the Reds’ defence.

We looked a threat on the counter-attack as Devante Cole broke away on the right, beating George Honeyman, who cynically brought down the forward just outside the area, on the left-hand side.

Josh Benson took the resulting free-kick, which found Cole in the area, but he headed over from close range.

Both teams enjoyed chances at either end of the pitch, with Callum Brittain stinging the palms of Nathan Baxter just after the half hour mark.

Good work from Lewie Coyle on the right-hand side allowed the Tigers full back to deliver an enticing ball across the six-yard box. Jasper Moon reacted, diverting the ball towards Collins’ goal and the Reds’ keeper made a fantastic reaction save, which fell for Honeyman in the area who made no mistake, rifling the ball home on 33 minutes.

Barnsley tried to respond before the interval, but an Aaron Leya Iseka effort on the break sailed over the bar.

HALF-TIME: Barnsley 0-1 Hull City

The second half began quietly, with the first notable action coming when the referee produced a yellow card for Hull defender Jacob Greaves.

Substitute, Styles nearly made an immediate impact on the left flank, driving and drilling a low shot on goal, but City stopper Baxter was equal to the effort.

The visitors all but confirmed their victory in the 75th minute, however. Lewis-Potter found himself in space in the area and worked the angle to drill low and hard into the net.

Shortly after, Ryan Longman rattled the post following a quick Tigers breakaway, while Collins was also on hand to keep out Richie Smallwood’s fierce drive as Hull left Oakwell with the spoils.

Reds XI: Collins (GK), J Williams (Styles), Kitching, Brittain, Woodrow (C), Benson (Palmer), Leya Iseka, Moon, Gomes, Helik, Cole (Adeboyejo).
