MICHAŁ HELIK IS PLAYER OF THE SEASON 20/21

8 May 2021

Our rock at the back in 20/21, Michał Helik is your Player of the Season!

Joining the Reds in September of last year, the 25-year-old central defender has impressed massively since arriving from Cracovia for an undisclosed fee.

Despite being red-carded on his BFC debut, much like last year's winner of this prestigious award, Alex Mowatt, our Polish defender has gone from strength to strength in helping the Reds to an end-of-season play-off place.

Not only have his defensive contributions been pivotal across the campaign, Helik has scored six goals for the club in all competitions, including the winning strikes against both Huddersfield Town and Millwall at Oakwell.

His outstanding form for Barnsley this term also saw him capped at international level for the first time by Poland when they met Hungary, and Helik would also go on to start at Wembley against England in March, in a World Cup qualifier.

Joining the likes of Eric Winstanley, Mick McCarthy, Stephen Foster and Ethan Pinnock as centre backs to pick up the ultimate accolade and be named Player of the Season here at Oakwell, we got Michał's thoughts ahead of this afternoon's final game of the regular season.

"I'm buzzing!" Declared an ecstatic Helik.

"I'm very thankful for all the fans' votes, and thankful to all of the players and staff who were so welcoming for me in the team.

"It's been a special year for us, and for me. My first year in Barnsley, my first year abroad and as I said, I'm buzzing to get this award, it's a big thing for me.

"Our strength this season was the team itself. And this has helped my dreams come true, in terms of making my national team debut.

"But the season for us is not finished and I still believe my other dream will come true!"

Helik won the fans vote for this year's award, with over 200 votes separating him from Mowatt in second place and Callum Brittain finishing third.

A big congratulations to Michał Helik
