Speaking after his all-action display during our 3-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers on Wednesday evening, Alex Mowatt says confidence is sky high in the Reds’ dressing room.

The skipper, who scored a trademark screamer and laid on two goals for his teammates, was outstanding at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium as Barnsley made it six consecutive Sky Bet Championship victories.

“I think it’s massive,” said Mowatt. “The lads are in there buzzing after the game and it’s six wins in a row; we having to keep taking each game as it comes and keep working hard and see where that takes us.”

His marvellous free-kick just before the half-hour mark restored the Reds’ lead after Charlie Austin had cancelled out Daryl Dike’s opener.

The American headed home from a corner to net his second goal for the club since his loan move from Orlando City, and Mowatt believes it is encouraging to see his team implementing their training ground routines on the pitch.

“That’s the area we’ve been working on in training and, to be fair, Muzz [Adam Murray] has been on at the lads because I’ve put some good balls in that area and haven’t scored, so thankfully we got one,” continued the 26-year-old.

“We were sloppy sometimes, which includes us giving away free-kicks. They were good from set-plays, so we were a bit sloppy but in the second half we just managed the game and we’re buzzing to get the win.

“When we’ve been in the lead, we’ve been really good at seeing the game out and keeping the lead and thankfully this was another one of those games.”

It’s the first time Mowatt has fired home a free-kick since our 3-0 victory over Plymouth Argyle back in April 2019, although he has certainly contributed his fair share of goals from open play since then.

The skipper feels it ranks high on his list of all-time strikes, placing it in a lofty position.

“I put it right up there, to be fair,” grinned Mowatt. “I haven’t scored a free-kick in a while, so I’ll definitely put it up there in my top four, I’d say.”
