JOHN MANNING | 1940 - 2021

1 March 2021

Barnsley Football Club is saddened to learn of the passing of former player John Manning.

Born in Liverpool, John Manning would enjoy a 14-year playing career that began back in 1961 at Anfield as a youth team player but really kicked off with fellow Merseyside outfit Tranmere Rovers where he'd make over 150 appearances for the club.

Spells with Shrewsbury Town, Norwich City, Bolton Wanderers and Walsall followed for the centre forward before a brief return to Prenton Park and Tranmere.

Then came a year with Crewe Alexandra where he caught the attention of Reds boss Jim Iley who signed him in 1973 with Barnsley a Fourth Division club at the time.

Manning would play 50 times for the Reds across two seasons, scoring nine goals, before finishing his career back at Gresty Road with Crewe.

After a brief time coaching in the Middle East, John returned to England and would go on to scout for various clubs in the Football League.

Everyone's thoughts at Oakwell are with the Manning family at this sad time.
