DARYL DIKE POST-WYCOMBE WANDERERS

18 March 2021

After netting two goals in our 3-1 win at Wycombe Wanderers on Wednesday evening, Daryl Dike believes it is important that Barnsley continue their fine form and momentum in the closing weeks of the season.

Our on-loan American forward scored twice after the interval at Adams Park to ensure the Reds extended their unbeaten Sky Bet Championship run to 12 games.

“Obviously, we had a big win against Bournemouth and we knew how Wycombe’s game plan would be and how they’d fight for the points that they need, and we knew that would be a battle,” began Dike.

“We came here and did the job and, of course, it’s great to get the two goals as well.”

Having enjoyed the better chances in the first half, Barnsley eventually made the breakthrough shortly before half-time as Cauley Woodrow bagged his 13th goal of another stellar campaign from the penalty spot.

It was no less than the Reds deserved and we excelled after the restart, with Dike proving too much for the Wycombe defence to handle as he took his tally to five since arriving from Orlando City.

“It’s a huge momentum push," he continued. "Cauley was calm, cool and collected and put it perfectly in the corner, and I thought it was great to get us going into the second half and make Wycombe panic a bit.

“So it was good for us to get that and get the momentum to push us on in the second half.

“We knew what we were capable of, so we kind of knew we could get it right in the second half. It was a good flick from Mads and I put it in the back of the net, so it was good to keep the momentum going.

“After that, we told ourselves that we weren’t going to stop – we were just going to keep going and going.”

Our next assignment sees Sheffield Wednesday visit Oakwell in what will be Dike’s first South Yorkshire derby.

Another three points would be just the tonic for the 20-year-old, but he insists he and his teammates will be taking nothing for granted despite the Owls’ lowly position in the league.

“We have to make sure we don’t slow down,” insisted the American international. “Maybe you look at their position in the table, but we have to make sure we keep going because every single opponent is going to be prepared for us.

“They’re going to be looking for us and think they’re going to have to compete. But we know our quality and know, if we play our game, we’ll get the result we want.”
