SCHMIDT DEPARTS FOR DANISH LOAN SPELL

21 June 2021

Reds striker to join Esbjerg fB on loan for the duration of the 21/22 campaign.

Austrian forward Patrick Schmidt has today joined Danish First Division outfit Esbjerg fB.

The 22-year-old signed for the Reds back in August of 2019 ahead of the return to the Sky Bet Championship but found opportunities limited under three separate coaches, most often restricted to appearances as a substitute.

It was from the bench where 'Pipo' struck winning goals away at Millwall in December of his first season at the club and of course, at Oakwell against Nottingham Forest in July of 2020, a huge goal as the Reds went on to retain their second tier status a week later, with Patrick setting up the crucial, winning goal away at Brentford.

He began last season brightly, scoring in a Carabao Cup victory at Middlesbrough but chances became limited for the former Austrian U21 international and he would later link up with SV Ried back in his homeland in a short-term loan deal, where he'd make 10 appearances and help the club avoid relegation.

Schmidt, who is contracted at Oakwell until 2023 now heads to Denmark and the seaport town of Esbjerg where EfB will this season be looking to gain promotion to the Danish Superliga after last season finishing 3rd, one place behind the promotion spots.
