JACK WALTON POST-WEDNESDAY

18 July 2021

Following his impressive display against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday afternoon, Jack Walton says he was delighted to be back out on the pitch.

Our stopper was as humble as ever in the wake of our 2-0 victory, not wanting to take credit for what was another fine team performance in our pre-season schedule.

“Like I always say – that’s my job,” he insisted. “But it was great to be back out on the pitch and get some minutes under my belt.

“It’s the first game for me for quite a while so it was nice just to get back out there, get a feel for it and I enjoyed it.”

There were plenty of tactical tweaks and a few unfamiliar and inexperienced faces in the Reds’ backline, with youngsters Jason Sraha, Rudi Pache and Amir Ariely all getting valuable game time under the watchful eye of Markus Schopp.

Walton was full of praise for his defenders, who hardly put a foot wrong all game against a determined Wednesday outfit.

“It’s a great experience for them,” continued our goalkeeper. “I know, myself, when I was that age to get minutes with the first team. I thought they did well, especially in such hot conditions, and it’s great for them.

“Everyone knows their roles – even when they come in, they’re ready and we work in training. Everyone understands the way we play and the triggers we have to do, so they all slotted in really well.”
