Barnsley Football Club can confirm that Steve Simpson has signed a one-year extension.
The Canadian forward was originally part of our Reds in the Community Shadow Scholarship programme, but his impressive performances were enough to secure a deal within our academy.
“It feels great,” declared Simpson upon penning his new contract. “I'm proud to represent the club; it is full of great people and I'm happy to continue being a part of it.”
Our U23s finished fourth in last season’s Professional Development League and registered a club record points total at that age category.
Simpson, who scored a magnificent overhead kick against Colchester United back in October, believes this group can only continue to progress and is keen to develop both individually and as a team.
“I think the group did excellent last season, we accumulated more points than any other Barnsley under 23s team so it was a great season for us and shows both players and staff are doing something right,” asserted the 21-year-old.
“After last season and knowing what we can achieve, our ambition this year is to get into those play-off spots. Collectively we want to do better than last season, that means demanding even more from ourselves – the last thing we want to do it go backwards.
“Getting into the first team is the main goal for me and the other under 23s players, I will need to be patient and keep working hard and make sure I take my chance when it comes.”
Everyone at Oakwell would like to congratulate Steve on his new deal.
