CONOR CHAPLIN PRE-TRANMERE ROVERS

7 January 2021

Ahead of our Emirates FA Cup third round tie with Tranmere Rovers, Conor Chaplin insists Barnsley want to maintain their good run of form and continue to build momentum.

The Reds welcome Keith Hill’s side to Oakwell on Sunday afternoon and our forward believes it is important that he and his teammates have the winning mentality that they have shown for large parts of the campaign.

“I think that any season you want to do well in the FA Cup; you don’t know what draw you’re going to get in the next game,” asserted Chaplin. “But, beside all that, it’s important to get into the habit of winning games and get into the habit of being competitive in games.

“We’re trying to build that mentality at the club to keep going and go again, and not just be satisfied with one win or two wins. It’s about wanting to go again and that’s what we want to build on.”

It has been a very productive season for Barnsley so far, who have risen to ninth in the Sky Bet Championship after a stellar December that saw us win six out of eight games.

But it comes as little shock to those on the inside, who always had the belief that they could achieve much more than they did in the previous campaign.

“I don’t think that it comes as a massive surprise within the group because we knew that we were going to be better than last season – that’s just the dynamic of having young players,” continued Chaplin.

“Last season was a big learning season for everyone at the club, the players probably most of all because we had a lot of young lads who were untested in the Championship. So, naturally and progressively, there’s going to be a season further down the line that’s going to be an improvement and we were confident coming into this season because of that.

“The way it happened at the end of last season brought us closer together as a group and made that team spirit even more. You can see that in the games we’ve turned around this season, games that last season we wouldn’t have won so it’s pleasing and good to be part of.

“We’ve got a really good bunch and everyone gets on well, and it’s testament to the gaffer because he’s been brilliant with everyone.”
