ALEX MOWATT POST-BLACKBURN

18 February 2021

Speaking after our 2-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday evening, Alex Mowatt says Barnsley performed much better after the interval.

The Reds had chances to take the lead before half-time, albeit nothing too clear cut in a cagey opening 45 at Oakwell, but they came out of the blocks flying for the second half and put their visitors to the sword.

“I think we were poor in the first half but they weren’t the best either,” admitted Mowatt. “At half-time, we said we needed to be a lot better in the second half and we’ve come out and most of the play was in their half.

“We were the team that was creating chances so I always thought we were going to win the game.”

Valérien Ismaël spoke in his post-match interview about the importance of being able to make five substitutions, and it is a sentiment echoed by the skipper, who believes those who were introduced from the bench made an impact.

Carlton Morris opened the scoring shortly after being brought on before Mowatt added a second as time ticked away, and he heaped praise on his teammates for swinging the contest in Barnsley’s favour.

“In the second half, we were putting balls in behind and got on the second balls more,” continued the 26-year-old. “Carlton came on and was excellent – I think he was the best player on the pitch when he came on. Dike was strong, as well, getting us up the pitch so I think we looked good.

“They gave us some fresh legs and something different. Every time Carlton got the ball he was driving at the defence, causing chaos and he got his goal and set me up as well.”
