MICHAŁ HELIK POST-MILLWALL

28 February 2021

Match-winner Michał Helik says he wants to keep contributing to help Barnsley pick up more points as the Sky Bet Championship enters the final few months.

The Polish centre-back was on hand to lash home from close range after Mads Andersen had flicked on Alex Mowatt’s deep cross to ensure the Reds won a fifth consecutive game.

“When I saw Mads was going for that ball, I felt that he could win it and flick it to me,” said Helik, speaking exclusively to iFollow Barnsley. “I was searching for a free space and tried to use it, and I did it.

“I’m happy that I can help the team, but the most important thing for me is the result of the team and I am happy that we are the winners.

“We showed a good performance. We conceded a bit of a stupid goal but, in the end, we are the winners and that is the most important thing for us.”

It was always likely to be a tough assignment against a Millwall side who were heading to Oakwell unbeaten in the nine previous league outings and hot on the heels of those chasing a coveted play-off spot come May.

But Barnsley showed true grit and determination against a physically imposing Lions team who rarely threatened one Helik had restored the Reds’ lead just before the hour mark.

“The gaffer said before the game that we need to show a warrior’s mentality and I think we showed it,” asserted the Pole. “We need to keep going and working hard.

“I think we can reach great goals this season but we need to focus on the next game.”
