REDS DRAW IN YORKSHIRE DERBY

4 December 2021

Barnsley came from behind to claim a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town in the Yorkshire derby on Saturday afternoon.

Carlton Morris’ first goal of the campaign cancelled out Lewis O’Brien’s opener in a fiercely contested encounter.

Barnsley had an early opportunity inside five minutes after intricate play down the left flank, and the ball found its way through to Callum Styles who saw his effort blocked by Lee Nicholls.

The visitors then had a chance of their own moments later in a goal mouth scramble, but Danny Ward was thwarted by Brad Collins from close range.

In an end-to-end encounter, the ever-lively Josh Koroma was next to try his luck as he looked to bend one from distance, but Collins was able to turn it over the bar.

Morris, operating on the left of a front three, was our biggest threat, and he worked a yard of space in the area before dragging his effort narrowly wide.

However, despite a period of pressure from Barnsley, the visitors went ahead just after the half hour mark when O’Brien drilled in low and hard from eight yards.

The Reds looked for a response, but it was Town who almost grabbed the next goal as Koroma cracked the bar with a thunderous attempt from 25-yards.

With the two minutes of stoppage time almost up, Michał Helik lofted the ball forward and Morris brought it down and lashed beyond Lee Nicholls to level the scores on the stroke of half-time.

HALF-TIME: Barnsley 1-1 Huddersfield Town

In a lively start to the second half, Huddersfield came close through two snapshots from O’Brien and Koroma that both flashed narrowly wide of Collins’ left-hand upright.

We looked assertive in possession, but were unable to create anything clear-cut in the final third as we continued to probe for a way past a resolute Terriers backline.

After cutting in from the right, Sorba Thomas fizzed an effort wide before Koroma’s shot took a nick off Liam Kitching en route to being parried by Collins.

Cauley Woodrow took aim from long range as we entered the final 10 minutes, but his strike zipped narrowly wide of the post off the greasy surface.

Barnsley kept pushing forward and Callum Brittain delivered a fine cross from the right that Morris nodded towards goal, however, his header was gathered comfortably by Nicholls.

Try as either side might, neither could make the breakthrough and had to settle for a share of the spoils.
