Exactly 400 days since his last competitive outing for the Reds, Ben Williams was back in action as we began our 21/22 Sky Bet Championship campaign with a 1-1 draw at Cardiff City.
The committed full-back missed all of last season after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury at St George’s Park, but has overcome that and put in a tremendous display against the Bluebirds to help Barnsley to a point in South Wales.
“It was a brilliant feeling to be out there,” began the 22-year-old, speaking exclusively to iFollow Barnsley. “Obviously, with the result, we probably felt we could have got three points but, on a personal note, it was a great feeling for me and a good start to the season.
“There were a little bit of nerves before the game being back in the squad and stuff, but it’s a really good feeling and something I’ve worked hard towards and what I’ve aimed to do at the start of the season.
“To start the game and get 75 minutes in the legs like I did, I couldn’t ask for more.”
A draw against Mick McCarthy’s Cardiff side is not to be sniffed at, particularly given our recent track record in the Welsh capital.
Williams feels it’s a decent result and a positive way to start the new campaign, and he was happy with his own display 353 days on from suffering his injury.
“If you’d have told us we’d have got a point here before the game, we’d have probably taken it,” he continued. “But the way the game went, we had quite a few chances which we could have scored and I think there was an offside goal in there as well.
“So, we’re happy with a point but disappointed not to get all three.
“I thought I coped well with it. Obviously, it was my first competitive game back in a long time, but I felt I dealt with it well – all the individual battles – and, for me, I just want to keep that place in there now.”
