DOMINIK FRIESER ON BLUES VISIT

26 August 2021

The in-form forward spoke to us ahead of Saturday's clash with Birmingham City here at Oakwell.

ON THE START TO THE SEASON

“I think it’s been a better start this season. It’s not been bad, but it could have been better. We are still disappointed about the last game. We had played such good football and led 2-0, we were doing well and then reverted in the second half to long balls.

“We had other opportunities to extend our lead, we could have made the game over before QPR even scored their first. But it’s all experience for the younger players. We have to learn from these situations and things will only get better across the season.”

DIFFERENT STYLE OF FOOTBALL

“It was successful last season, we got to the play-offs but lost. But it wasn’t the best football to play, it wasn’t great to watch at times. But it’s about results so we can’t just go completely the other way. We need to mix things up, but in the right moments.

“This style suits me and my game more, with the ball on the ground rather than in the air so often. It’s been a good start for me personally, it’s good to get two goals already but I want a lot more this year. I know what I can do and now I have the chance to show this.”

ON PLAYERS MISSING

“It’s hard that we are missing so many good players, especially when we are playing a game every few days. They’re big misses. But it’s up to me and the other players to take our chance and make sure we don’t miss them too much.

“And I’m sure there will be plenty of options once everyone is back fit, we have a good squad here, lots of talent and a great mindset.”

INTERNATIONAL HOPES

“Of course, my ambition and dream would be to get selected by Austria. It’s something that I will never give up on. All I can do is continue to focus on my performances for Barnsley and if I can keep performing well, then who knows?

“I feel like I’ll do much better this season because this is the style of football that I’m more used to rather than the long balls.”

ON BIRMINGHAM CITY

“What I’ve seen of them, they try to play at times, but I expect them to go long on Saturday. That’s down to them. We have to find the solutions to get around that kind of play.

“They have made a good start, they had a great win last weekend. But we want to finish off the month with another positive result, to confirm our own good start to this season.”
