ALEX MOWATT POST-BORO

11 April 2021

Following our 2-0 victory over Middlesbrough on Saturday afternoon, Alex Mowatt expressed his delight at a training ground routine paying dividends when it mattered.

Our skipper broke the deadlock just after the hour mark at Oakwell as his corner evaded everyone and sneaked home at the far post to put the Reds on course for another priceless win.

“I’ve been shooting from corners,” admitted Mowatt, speaking exclusively to iFollow Barnsley. “I scored one against Reading and it got disallowed, but it was nice to get a corner goal – the last time I scored one of them was Sunday League, I think.

“That’s the set-piece; I get told to shoot at the front post and I’ve been doing it. I’m not surprised it’s gone in really. Every corner we have, I’ve been aiming for that area and it’s been working; we’ve scored a few goals but it was nice to get one myself.”

With Reading succumbing to defeat at Watford in the Sky Bet Championship’s Friday night fixture, the onus was on Barnsley to seize the initiative and put real daylight between themselves and the chasing pack.

That’s exactly what the Reds did with another commanding display, which has seen us open up a five-point gap to the Royals in seventh place with just five games remaining.

“Every game is important anyway, no matter what the results are around us,” continued Mowatt. “We want to win our games and put ourselves in the best position we can and, whatever happens around us, we can’t control that but it was nice for Reading to lose.

“It’s looking great but we need to keep going. Nothing is done yet; we need to keep winning games and keep performing like we did in the second half.”
