MICHAL HELIK SIGNS FOR THE REDS!

9 September 2020

Polish defender puts pen to paper on Oakwell deal to strengthen Gerhard Struber's defensive options ahead of the new season.

We are delighted to welcome Michal Helik to Barnsley Football Club after the commanding central defender signed a three-year deal with the Reds, subject to international clearance.

Completing an undisclosed transfer from Polish Ekstraklasa outfit KS Cracovia on his birthday, the 25-year-old will immediately link up with the first team in preparation for the opening league game this Saturday against Luton Town.

Adding further experience to our squad for the 20/21 campaign, Helik arrives after seven years in his homeland where he made 137 appearances in spells with Cracovia and Ruch Chorzow.

He leaves Krakow having been instrumental in the club's first ever lifting of the Polish Cup, where they ended the 19/20 season by beating Lechia Gdánsk 3-2 in the final.

Chief Executive Officer, Dane Murphy was pleased to bolster the Reds' rearguard with another highly sought-after player.

"As a Club we have been looking at Michal for a long time and as soon as the deal was possible, we jumped all over it.

"He's exactly the kind of defender we covet and will complement our backline as we head into the new season.

"I'd like to wish Michal many happy returns and look forward to seeing him contribute towards a successful campaign with the Reds."

Birthday boy, Helik told us he was thrilled to get the move done and says he can't wait to get down to business.

"I'm very happy to be here.

"It's a great opportunity for me and I'm looking forward to my first training session and meeting my new teammates.

"This is a great club with a big history and I'm excited to play here at Oakwell."
