Barnsley Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of Matty James on a three-month loan deal.

The midfielder, who spent the second half of the 2016/17 campaign at Oakwell, arrives from the Foxes for a second spell in South Yorkshire having endeared himself to the Reds’ faithful in his first stint.

After making his Barnsley debut in a 1-0 victory at Rotherham United in January 2017, the 29-year-old went on to make a further 17 appearances as we recorded a 14th place finish in the Sky Bet Championship.

Having already bolstered the ranks, Chief Executive Officer, Dane Murphy, was thrilled to secure James’ services as the midfielder became the Reds’ seventh addition of a productive transfer window.

“This is an excellent signing for the Club. Matty is an accomplished player with a wealth of experience. He was just as eager to return as the Club were to bring him back. The lasting connection between Matty James, the Club and the supporters was a significant variable in his decision.

“We have made significant steps to strengthen in key areas and this addition shows that we are continuing to make progress on the field.”

Upon sealing the deal for his Oakwell return, James expressed his pleasure at re-joining the Reds as he spoke to a handful of supporters on Zoom.

“It’s fantastic. There’s a lot that has happened over the past couple of years with certain things, personally. The belief to be back from the Barnsley support is fantastic, so I’m excited, looking forward to it and can’t wait to get started.

“It almost happened in January, but it just didn’t come to light in the end. We’ve been in talks over the last few days to get back, get some games under my belt and hopefully help the team.”

Everyone at Barnsley FC would like to welcome Matty back to Oakwell.
