Romal Palmer Signs Until 2022

20 May 2020

Barnsley Football Club can confirm that Romal Palmer has signed a new two-year contract, which will keep him at the club until at least 2022.

The dynamic youngster has been at Oakwell since 2016 and has caught the eye with a number of assured performances at U23 level, which resulted in a call-up to first team fixtures at Bristol City and Charlton Athletic earlier this season.

Palmer has often trained with Gerhard Struber and the senior squad as he continues his professional development and, at just 21-years-old, is regarded as a player with a very bright future at the club.

“I’m over the moon,” said Palmer. “It’s been a tough few years, really, but I’m just trying to find my feet. I got a little bit of faith with the new gaffer, so that’s helped me a lot, confidence-wise. So I’m delighted and can’t wait to push on now.

“Knowing that the club is there to support and back me when there’s been doubts in my head, they’ve pulled me to the side and told me they know what I’m capable of and to go and prove it. That’s down to me, now, and I can’t wait to prove it and repay the faith they’ve put in me. Hopefully, in the next two years, that can be done.”

Of the current first team squad, Ben Williams, Jordan Williams, Elliot Simoes and Jacob Brown have all enjoyed a successful transition from U23s to first team football, and Chief Executive, Dane Murphy is keen to see Palmer follow in their footsteps.

Speaking on the news, Murphy said: “It’s evident that Romal posses real talent and we’re delighted that he has signed with us for a further two years. It’s always uplifting to see a player progress through our academy system and into the first-team squad.

“This club is known for giving youth an opportunity to develop both on and off the field. With professional football’s current structure, this approach, coupled with the continued progression of academy graduates is integral to the success and sustainability of Barnsley FC.”

All at Oakwell would like to congratulate Romal on his new contract and wish him luck.
