John McCann | 1934 - 2020

14 May 2020

Barnsley Football Club are saddened to learn of the recent passing of former winger John McCann.

Spending four years at Oakwell between 1955 and 1959, Glasgow-born McCann scored 17 goals for the Reds over 118 appearances at the club.

The Scots flyer will be fondly remembered for his efforts in Red, and his individual performance against Huddersfield Town back in 1957 is still talked about to this very day, as he scored and created four goals in a 5-0 thrashing of The Terriers away from home.

He would later go on to play for the West Yorkshire outfit whilst also being able to count Bristol City, Darlington, Chesterfield and Derby County among the clubs he turned out for in an 11-year career.

John (second row, furthest right) lived in Barnsley following the end of his time in the game, latterly at Deangate Care Home in Mapplewell.

It's with immense sadness that we lose John McCann and our thoughts as a club are with his friends, family and loved ones at this difficult time.
