Gerhard Struber on Cardiff City defeat

8 March 2020

The post-match thoughts of the Barnsley boss following home loss to Welsh outfit.

Gerhard Struber was left disappointed with his side’s ‘lack of plan’ following their 2-0 defeat to Cardiff City on Saturday.

The Reds did well enough in the first half but seemed to lose in a physical battle to Neil Harris’ men as the match wore on.

Struber told us: “We’ve shown two faces today, the first half wasn’t special, but it was okay. In the second half, we completely forgot our plan.

“Cardiff like to play a lot of long balls and we ended up doing the same. When you try to play the same as them, you have no chance.”

Under the guidance of Struber this season, the Reds have played a quick, high-energy style of play, especially in recent weeks. But that wasn’t really on display in this game. The Head Coach explained: “After the goals, we didn’t have the right attitude to go and get back into the game.

“We sometimes have big ups and downs, and the second half showed me what I’m not used to with my team, they’re capable of a lot better. It is disappointing, the energy after the second goal was not enough.”

During the Reds’ recent upturn in results, performances all around the pitch had been fantastic. Especially in defence, with the team managing to achieve three clean sheets out of the last four. Against the Bluebirds, those levels weren’t matched, and this left Gerhard bitterly disappointed.

He stated: “We didn’t defend well for the goals. We gifted them too much space. But the whole second half, was not enough from everyone, to either earn a point or win the game. Today, we did not go out of our comfort zone, it was too easy for them.”
