PREVIEW: QPR Vs Barnsley

The inside track on the Reds' trip to face Rangers

16 June 2020

Football kicks back off on Saturday as Barnsley head to the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium to take on QPR - here's the preview.

It's a 300+ mile round trip this Saturday, as the Reds head to the capital hoping for another huge three points in their battle for Sky Bet Championship survival.

Having suffered back to back defeats pre-lockdown, against Reading and Cardiff City, the Reds' upward momentum was halted, falling seven points adrift of safety and so this weekend's trip to take on QPR could prove pivotal for Gerhard Struber's side in their quest for Championship survival.

Ahead of the return to play, we held a Zoom press conference where journalists quizzed both Struber and Reds forward Jacob Brown for over an hour.

Both videos are available to view for free over on iFollow Barnsley.

Our hosts were unbeaten in their last six fixtures, with notable victories over Derby County and most recently before COVID-19 struck, Preston North End.

They are six points behind the playoff positions, with nine matches remaining.

Led by former Brentford manager Mark Warburton, it's a been season where Rangers have lacked any real consistency, with spells of great form married to difficult runs of results.

But in Eberechi Eze, the R's have one of the division's standout performers. The midfielder, a product of the Millwall youth system (the Lions released him in 2016) has contributed to over 20 goals in the Championship this season, be them his own strikes or efforts he's created for others.

Struber Pre-QPR

18 June 2020

Earlier this season the Reds thumped QPR at Oakwell, a 5-3 victory in what was a pulsating encounter where both sides' backlines were troubled throughout. That game saw a first Reds hat-trick for striker Conor Chaplin, and the scoreline flattered the visitors somewhat. It will need to be similar you'd feel this weekend.

In terms of the Reds' record against QPR away from home, you'd be hard pressed to find a poorer historical showing.

You have to go back 70 years and to January 1950 for the Reds' one and only victory at QPR. They have since lost 22 and drawn three of their 25 visits including 11 consecutive defeats.

However, two of Barnsley's three league victories this season have come in the nation's capital; stirring performances and shock results at Millwall and Fulham, so London holds no fear for Struber's side heading into this one.
