Struber disappointed with Stoke defeat

5 July 2020

Gerhard Struber is looking for Barnsley to bounce back after suffering a 4-0 loss at Stoke City on Saturday afternoon.

The Reds, who had been so assured defensively since the restart, were dismantled at the bet365 Stadium, and our Head Coach is eager for his side to react against fellow strugglers Luton Town on Tuesday.

“Everyone is disappointed; it’s normal,” admitted Struber. “Everyone knows we had a big chance today; we had big preparation for this game and we forgot the basics.

“We have to look forward; we need to recover and have a good regeneration and, on Monday, we need to bring the right mindset and this is my responsibility so that we are ready against a difficult opponent.”

Stoke were ahead inside the opening ten minutes and quickly doubled their advantage, before effectively ending the tie as a contest late in the first half.

Tom Ince’s strike in the dying embers compounded a miserable day at the office for Barnsley who, despite enjoying the lion’s share of possession, failed to create any gilt-edged opportunities of their own.

“It was a difficult game from the first second until the last second; it was not enough to stay in the league,” continued Struber. “I think the early goals crashed our mindset, crashed our attitude and we lost our belief in our game style and, after that, we didn’t show the right face.

“When we were on the ball, we weren’t brave and didn’t have the right attitude. The details were not in the right direction, especially when the opponent play this style and we are not on a high level.

“When we remember the last three games, this was a big surprise for me with our performance. We can change this picture on Tuesday and this is what we need.”
