Mowatt gives his verdict on loss at Stoke

5 July 2020

Speaking after our 4-0 loss at Stoke City on Saturday afternoon, Alex Mowatt delivered a damning verdict of the Reds’ performance, insisting it was too easy for the hosts.

Sam Vokes’ header and a Tyrese Campbell brace put the Potters in complete control before the interval, while Tom Ince’s late strike rounded off a bad day at the office for Barnsley.

“Going 3-0 down, it was always going to be an uphill battle, especially when they sat behind the ball and counter on us,” began Mowatt. “But I don’t think we looked like causing a threat all day and we were really poor.

“Two set-pieces and an individual error, you find yourselves 3-0 down. You can’t expect to win a game like that; we didn’t create any chances and I don’t think we had any shots apart from probably my free-kick. We needed to cause stress on their defenders and we didn’t do that; we played far too deep and made the game easy for them.”

Up next for the Reds is a proverbial six-pointer against Luton Town on Tuesday evening, who were thrashed 5-0 at home to Reading this weekend.

Our captain believes it is imperative that his side put this defeat behind them and focus all of their attention on putting things right at Kenilworth Road.

“We can’t let that happen again,” asserted Mowatt. “It’s frustrating because Tuesday was so good and it’s so inconsistent from us to play like that.

“The important thing is that we show a bit of fight; we didn’t show any fight at all today – it was so flat; you could hear a pin drop in the stadium. It looked like we gave them the three points in the opening 30 minutes and, it was an uphill battle and it was never going to be easy doing that.”
