U23s | Alex Wollerton previews Birmingham trip

23 January 2020

Barnsley U23s travel to Birmingham on Friday afternoon looking to build on their impressive 4-1 victory over Burnley last week.

The young Reds got back to winning ways in emphatic style against the Clarets after picking up just one point from their previous four outings.

And, having beaten City 5-2 earlier in the campaign, Alex Wollerton feels his side will be full of confidence as they head to the Midlands to face a Blues team that currently sit fourth in the Professional Development League table.

“We are always confident in our ability as a team,” said the midfielder. “We know Birmingham will be physical and a threat going forward, but hopefully we can play to our strengths in the game and get the win.

“It was massive for the boys to have a reaction against Burnley last week. We’ve all been working hard in training all week and it was good to see the rewards.”

Victory for Barnsley will see Martin Devaney’s side climb above Crewe Alexandra into sixth place, with the Railwaymen not in action until Monday when they entertain Bolton Wanderers.

However, Wollerton is wary of a potential backlash from City who could be looking to avenge their heavy defeat at the Oakwell Training Ground back in October.

“We had a strong team last time round and I think they will definitely be up for making amends,” admitted the 20-year-old. “But we’ll be ready for the test.

“We’re a close group and the boys are going into this full of confidence, and hopefully we can replicate that on the pitch.”

You can see how the young Reds fare by attending the game at the Trillion Trophy Training Centre, kick-off at 1:30pm.
