Kenny Dougall speaks ahead of Preston clash

21 January 2020

Kenny Dougall wants Barnsley to bounce back from the ‘disappointment’ of losing against Bristol City at the weekend by taking all three points when Preston North End visit Oakwell on Tuesday.

The Reds were beaten by a late Niclas Eliasson strike at Ashton Gate despite putting in another impressive display, and the Australian is adamant that the result would have been different if his side had been more clinical.

“We’re disappointed because for large parts of the match we dominated the game; we missed a lot of good chances that, on another day, we score and walk away with three points and that’s where the disappointment comes from,” said Dougall. “That’s the general feeling in the camp.

“That’s the difference at the moment. For most of the games this season, we’ve done really well but we’ve either ended up not taking our chances or conceding sloppy goals and that’s been a theme of the season. To be fair, though, in recent weeks and the last month, we’ve done really well and had a good spell.”

Victory over the Lilywhites will see Barnsley close the gap to Stoke City to a point following the Potters’ 1-0 win at table-topping West Bromwich Albion on Monday evening.

Dougall insists the Reds have enough self-belief given the recent run of results to claw their way out of trouble and start climbing the Sky Bet Championship table.

“The boys are confident – a few months ago we were seven or eight points from safety and now we’re much closer,” continued the midfielder. “It shows that a lot can change quickly and we’ve found ourselves in a good run of form.

“We obviously had a slip up at the weekend, but we need to get back to winning ways and start picking up points – especially here at Oakwell where we’ve been dominant for most games.”
