Gerhard Struber reacts to Hull victory

27 February 2020

Following our hard-fought 1-0 victory over Hull City in the Sky Bet Championship on Wednesday evening, Gerhard Struber insists his side had the right mentality to come out on top in what was a tough encounter.

Cauley Woodrow’s strike three minutes before the interval ensured Barnsley left the KCOM Stadium with three precious points to continue their fight for survival.

“It’s a good moment, right now,” admitted Struber, speaking in his post-match interview. “I’m very happy and proud of the performance from my team and also in the last few weeks; we did the right things, had the right attitude and the right energy together and also the right game plan. In the end, it’s very important that we pick up the points.

“All the teams at the bottom are picking up points right now and I think this is not so easy. The Championship is so tough but, right now, many teams are with us in the relegation fight.”

It’s now three consecutive wins for the Reds, who have closed the gap from nine points to just three and are putting pressure on the teams above them.

One of those, who can potentially be dragged into the relegation scrap, is Reading, who Barnsley face on Saturday.

Another victory for Struber’s side at the Madejski Stadium this weekend could potentially result in the Royals sitting just two points above the drop zone, depending on events elsewhere, as this fascinating basement battle heats up.

“There was a big energy necessary for us to win and I am very happy, but our focus is on Saturday,” continued the Austrian. “We have to recover our battery and prepare a good situation for our next difficult opponent away in Reading.

“The performance in the last games was very good for our self-confidence and every single player was on fire – and this is what we need reproduced in every game. It’s not so easy on Saturday that we bring the same energy that we need against Reading to win – that is the goal on Saturday and we have to work in the next time.”
