Michael Sollbauer reacts to victory over Middlesbrough

Post-match thoughts of Reds defender

23 February 2020

Following our 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough on Saturday afternoon, Michael Sollbauer expressed his delight at another hard-fought three points to help boost Barnsley in their fight for survival.

The Reds’ centre-back was outstanding from the first whistle and believes his side managed to build on last week’s impressive performance at high-flying Fulham.

“It was a really important game,” said Sollbauer. “I think, in our situation, every game is important. After our big win at Fulham, we had a good week in training and wanted to finish this week with a big performance. We kept a clean sheet, so only had to score one goal and it was a great finish from Chaps. This is a big win.”

The game was stark contrast to the victory in west London, with Barnsley having to grind out the win and dig deep to hang on despite Boro’s late rally.

Sollbauer and co. are now off the foot of the table and have dragged Middlesbrough into a relegation scrap in the process, and he insists the Reds are full of belief.

“Every game is a big battle; you have to fight in every duel,” continued the Austrian. “We had chances in the first half to score, but we need to take more risks. We were patient and this was really important; we believed that we could score and it was a good performance. This is a very good result against Middlesbrough.”

This was Sollbauer’s first win at Oakwell since arriving from Wolfsberger AC in the January transfer window.

The 29-year-old has put in a number of accomplished displays in that time and he praised the home faithful for their unwavering support during a battling performance.

“This is important for the team; the feeling in the stadium that we believe,” insisted Sollbauer. “It will be important for the next weeks that Oakwell is really hard for the opponents to come and we are really pleased with this performance.”
