MICHAEL SOLLBAUER POST-BOURNEMOUTH

5 December 2020

Following the 4-0 loss at home to Bournemouth on Friday evening, Michael Sollbauer gave an honest assessment of the Reds’ performance.

Barnsley were the architects of their own downfall, with the Cherries showing their clinical side as they punished a series of mistakes on a miserable night at Oakwell.

“I think it was a tough one,” admitted Sollbauer. “These kinds of mistakes are not the level or our way of playing. We had a clear plan and, with these kinds of mistakes, it’s very hard to play.

“We have to avoid this for the next games if we want to increase our level and these are the type of games we have to be competitive with; this is our goal. I think they are one of the best teams in the league, to be fair, and if you give them these opportunities, they will take it.

“In my opinion, we are all very upset because we wanted to bring a good performance and I am very disappointed at this moment because it’s not our way of playing. We have to say, very clear, this performance is not enough.”

There were plenty of chances for Barnsley, who came close through Alex Mowatt, Mads Andersen, Cauley Woodrow and Luke Thomas, while also threatening the Bournemouth goal with a number of wicked crosses.

But the Reds were unable to make the breakthrough and Sollbauer insists his side need to be more ruthless in both boxes.

“I think this exactly the score we deserve; we gave away too many easy chances in my opinion,” continued the Austrian defender. “If we want to step up the table and increase our level, we have to avoid this. This is the Championship and we want to be better every day.

“In the end, they scored three goals because of our mistakes and another goal. We also had good opportunities to score – we have to score and this is also our problem as a team.”
