ALEX MOWATT POST-ROTHERHAM UNITED

30 December 2020

Speaking after our 2-1 victory over Rotherham United on Tuesday evening, Alex Mowatt believes it was the perfect way to end what has been a crazy year.

From looking like certainties for relegation this time 12 months ago to pushing for the play-offs – with the added drama of a great escape thrown in for good measure – few would have predicted the progress Barnsley have made in such a short space of time.

“It’s been mad,” admitted Mowatt. “We’re eighth now in the league, which shows how far we’ve come from the end of last season. It’s been a great start but we need to keep going.

“We’ve got to take each game as it comes; we’re in a good position but we want to keep winning as many games as we can all season and see where it takes us.”

December has been a particularly fruitful month for the Reds, who have picked up 18 points from their eight fixtures and soared up the Sky Bet Championship table.

Crucial to that run of form has been the skipper, who added to his strike against Preston North End by setting up Cauley Woodrow for the opener before scoring what proved to be the eventual winner against the Millers.

“I was buzzing, especially to start fast because we’ve conceded a lot of goals early so, to start fast and get a goal and an assist in a game, is always good so I’m delighted,” continued Mowatt.

“It was similar to the Preston goal; Stylesy set me and I’ve put it in the far corner. I did one in the warm-up and said I was going to score one and thankfully I did.

“I think we’ve had lots of good wins, seen games out, had a lot of 2-1 wins and a lot of derby wins as well, so it’s been a great month.”
