REDS EDGED OUT IN FINAL WARM-UP FIXTURE

29 August 2020

Barnsley defeated 2-1 by Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon.

A late penalty handed our hosts the victory in this afternoon's last pre-season friendly, in a game the Reds had more than held their own in against Premier League opposition.

Gerhard Struber's side dominated the opening 20 minutes, particularly possession and penned the Toon in at times, with Callum Styles and Alex Mowatt orchestrating things from the middle of the park.

Conor Chaplin and Jacob Brown saw efforts repelled by home 'keeper Karl Darlow before Newcastle took their first real opportunity to score on 26 minutes.

Some good play out wide on the left freed Jonjo Shelvey who got to the byline and cut back towards the edge of the box for the incoming Andy Carroll to fire in, first time, left-footed into the bottom corner and beyond Jack Walton.

Barnsley remained positive and Mowatt placed a left-footed effort of his own just wide, whilst Brown was again thwarted by Darlow inside the box after another sparkling Reds move.

HALF-TIME: Newcastle 1-0 Barnsley

There were a number of changes at the break and then throughout the second period, but just like the opening 45, it was Struber's side dictating play and the likes of Elliot Simoes and Patrick Schmidt saw chances come and go before the Reds grabbed an equaliser their play had merited.

It was a very good move down the right-hand side where eventually Kilian Ludewig thought against shooting, instead clipping a ball into the six yard box for the unmarked Marcel Ritzmaier to finish coolly from close-range.

The Austrian midfielder was operating on the left flank and was outstanding in his second half stint. It was a pleasing performance all round in fairness, but the Reds didn't get rewarded with a result as the hosts came on strong in the latter stages.

And after Brad Collins had denied them once or twice, there was no disputing the penalty given for a foul on Jacob Murphy, with the wide-man himself powering home the spot kick to give Newcastle the win.

FULL-TIME: Newcastle 2-1 Barnsley
