Write For The Reds: My Barnsley Journey

19 April 2020

Scarlett was a part of the Barnsley FC family as soon as she was born!

My experience with Barnsley started as soon as I was born, my name is Scarlett as it’s a shade of red!!!  I didn’t really have a choice in being a Barnsley fan, but I’m glad I am one, although we may not always win, when we do it’s awesome!!! From a young age I have been so interested in football and all its ups and downs, the players may come and go but the fans stay, and that’s what is so special about a hearty club like Barnsley.

My funny memories with Barnsley include meeting Conor Hourihane in the Co-op, buying cheese and onion crisps and Lucozade to singing “he’s got a plant pot on his head” at Rochdale.

I have been twice to Wembley to see the Super Reds win, and over the years of football collected many shirts, one for each year I’ve lived! I love the away games and have been to 32 stadiums.

I have met many of the players, but a special time was when Peter Ramage came into my school to give me a signed shirt! I had an asthma attack at the Doncaster game at the Keepmoat stadium. I wasn’t expecting it and it was a lovely surprise to see him at my school.

As I am now 13, many teenagers (stereotypically girls) would ‘grow out’ of football but I still love going to the matches every Saturday as I love the matchday experience, home and away.

I have now moved to Holmfirth, it’s still near enough to Barnsley, however, there is a downside, everyone at my school supports Huddersfield Town! I do get teased for being a Barnsley fan but it’s fine because when we beat Huddersfield, I’m the only one who can taunt them back! I will forever be a Barnsley fan and stick by my team.

It can be upsetting when we lose but I know that at some point Barnsley will be even more amazing than they are now, then we will be the ones who can be the pride of Yorkshire!
