PREVIEW: Nottingham Forest Vs Barnsley

The inside track on our trip to the City Ground

20 September 2019

The Reds head to Nottingham this weekend in Sky Bet Championship action as Barnsley face Forest - it's time for the preview!

With the Reds denied any points late on in the Yorkshire Derby last time out, Daniel Stendel will be looking for a reaction this weekend as we face Forest on the road.

Last Sunday's 2-0 home defeat against Leeds United saw a much improved performance and for 83 minutes, Barnsley probably edged proceedings in terms of chances created. But profligacy in front of goal and a goal unfairly chalked off minutes before Leeds took the lead saw us beaten on home soil for the second Oakwell game in succession.

That latest defeat saw the Reds drop into the relegation zone but spirits remain high in the camp with players returning from injury in recent weeks to help boost Stendel's options.

Both Bambo Diaby and Cameron McGeehan are closest this weekend to making their respective returns. The defender and midfielder were rated as 50/50 by the coaching staff in terms of being involved at Forest.

Subscribers to iFollow Barnsley can get the pre-match thoughts of both striker Cauley Woodrow and First Team Coach, Chris Stern who previewed Saturday's 3pm kick-off when they met the media at Oakwell during the week.

With nine games played in all competitions so far this season, Nottingham Forest have started the new campaign quite well, with just the opening day defeat to West Brom being the only blemish on their record. And even that loss was harsh on Forest.

They've beaten Birmingham City, Fulham and Swansea City since then and gained a point at Elland Road against Leeds. On top of this, The Tricky Trees have progressed to the Third Round of the Carabao Cup having seen off Fleetwood Town and then their big rivals Derby County 3-0 last time out.

Forest score

Coached by former French international Sabri Lamouchi, Forest have invested massively in the last couple of years, recruiting a number of high-profile players and their ambitions are clearly set on the Premier League.

With experienced pro's such as Michael Dawson, Ben Watson and Lewis Grabban among their ranks and exciting continental additions like Joao Carvalho, Brice Samba and Rafael Mir, there's a real exciting blend prevalent in the Forest ranks and their hopes of gaining promotion back to the top flight after a 20-year absence.

Brian Clough

Two-time European Cup winners, the new millennium hasn't been kind to the City Ground outfit.

Those glory days under the late, great Brian Clough seem a long time ago now but on Saturday our hosts will be celebrating the legacy of their greatest ever manager who died on this day 15 years ago.

In terms of history between Forest and the Reds, Saturday will see the 83rd meeting of the two clubs and there's absolutely nothing to separate us.

With 30 victories apiece, one of us will edge in front in the historical head-to-head record come 5pm Saturday.

Hourihane celebrates

Our last trip to the City Ground saw us comfortably beaten 3-0 in April of 2018. We'll quickly gloss over that one and look to the 2017 visit when a last-minute Conor Hourihane wonder-strike saw us to a 1-0 victory.

There are no tickets available for this fixture with the City Ground set for a sell-out crowd for the first time this season, but fans unable to support the Reds in person can enjoy LIVE and uninterrupted commentary from Nottingham via iFollow Barnsley.
